Joseph Turrin
Joseph grew up in the rural town of Dungog where he became interested in art and design at a young age through the work of his mother and father who owned the local antiques and home wares business. Surrounded by beautiful pieces of art and very creative parents this rubbed off. Drawing inspiration from nature, Joseph Turrin's ceramic practice involves experimentation with a variety of form, colour and texture. Turrin’s work ranges from utilitarian tableware to unique vessels and sculptural pieces. Turrin’s approach to making is playful in manner, with coil-building the predominant technique used. His work is inspired by colours and textures of plants, animals, and landscapes. The form and surface of each piece is a site for experimentation of both texture, colour and functionality. Vibrant colours and intricate scale or petal like surface detail highlight the markers finger mark. Turrin was the winner of the inaugural Bluethumb ArtPrize for Sculpture (2021) Turrin was awarded the Royal Doulton & UNSW Art & Design Award. (2016) Where he was awarded a month internship at the Royal Doulton global design department in the Wedgwood factory - Staffordshire, United Kingdom.
