Sophia van Gent
Artist Bio
Originally from rural New South Wales, Sophia trained at Transit Dance in Melbourne, completing her studies under the mentorship of Israel Aloni in Transit’s 2018 International Professional Pathway program.
During her time in Melbourne Sophia performed in numerous works, including the premiere of ‘Colossus’ performed with Stephanie Lake Company for Melbourne Fringe, as well as new works by Israel Aloni (ilDance), Chris Evans (of Hofesh Shechter) and Jo Lloyd.
Previously Sophia has performed with Lewis Major Projects in the ‘And Then Some’ season presented by STRUT Dance in Perth and a reprise of Stephanie Lake’s ‘Colossus’ for Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2019. She has understudied for Hofesh Shechter’s ‘The Bad’ presented by STRUT for Perth Festival 2020 and performed Lewis Major’s ‘Lien’ for the Keir Choreographic Award in Melbourne.
Recently, Sophia has been working with Catapult Dance, performing in the Newcastle season of ‘Awkward’ and the beginning of a collaboration with Kate Weare in New York. She also performed in the 2021 Adelaide Festival with Lewis Major Projects and now is beginning an independent collaboration for Hurtsville Art Gallery.
